Merkley Applauds Senators for Voting Against a Blank Check for War With Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after 50 Senators voted to prevent any funds from being used on an unauthorized war with Iran. Merkley teamed up with Senators Tom Udall (D-NM) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) to ensure that the Senate voted on this critical issue of war and peace this week:

“Today, a majority of the U.S. Senate stood up and sent a message to the White House: No blank check for war with Iran.

“There is no doubt that war with Iran would be a reckless, disastrous mistake. We cannot allow a Twitter-happy, impulsive President and the warmongers in his administration to drag our nation into another regime-change war in the Middle East.

“President Trump should look at today’s vote and heed the bipartisan message so many Senators sent today: No unauthorized wars. No war with Iran.”
