Merkley Statement on Mnuchin Nomination

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement on Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin:

“Steven Mnuchin is the wrong man to serve as America’s Treasury Secretary.

“He is the wrong man because he comes straight out of Wall Street, with all the values and policy positions that destroyed our economy in 2008.

“He is the wrong man because after leaving Wall Street, he became known as a foreclosure king for foreclosing on more than 36,000 families.

“He is the wrong man because he wants to dismantle the Wall Street reforms ending the predatory financial practices that had turned the American dream of homeownership into a nightmare.

“America needs a Treasury Secretary driving our economy who believes in an economy that works for working Americans, not one that is exploited for Wall Street profits. America needs a Treasury Secretary who worked to put tens of thousands of people into homes, rather than someone who made a fortune throwing them out of their homes and into the street. That’s why I voted ‘no’ on Mnuchin’s nomination.”

Merkley spoke on the Senate floor earlier urging his colleagues to vote ‘no’ on Mnuchin. Video of his floor speech can be found here.
