Merkley Applauds EPA’s Commitment to Fuel Standards that Save Money and Cut Pollution

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed to continue the carbon pollution standards for cars and light trucks through 2025:

The EPA’s re-affirmation of the broadly supported fuel efficiency standards through 2025 is a common-sense win-win-win; these fuel economy standards are good for our consumers, economy and environment alike. These fuel economy standards, which first took effect in 2012, were supported by a broad coalition of auto manufacturers as well as labor and environmental organizations. The standards will make cars more fuel efficient over time, while providing auto manufacturers with much needed policy certainty. Today’s announcement re-affirms our commitment to make our auto sector more competitive, nearly double our fuel economy, dramatically cut carbon pollution, and save American drivers billions at the pump. For the sake of our health, economy and planet, these standards are something everyone can and should get behind.
