WASHINGTON – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after the bipartisan legislation to extend emergency unemployment benefits overcame its final filibuster in the U.S. Senate with 61 votes, allowing a majority-rules vote on final passage on Monday:
“In Oregon and across the nation, families looking for work need a bridge that will help get them to the next job,” said Merkley. “This lifeline creates stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger economy. Today, the U.S. Senate did the right thing by moving forward to restore a stronger bridge for periods of high unemployment. Now it’s up to the House to put common sense ahead of Tea Party politics.”
Merkley is one of ten Senators, five Democrats and five Republicans, who sponsored the bipartisan deal.
