Merkley Statement on Cybersecurity Bill

Washington, DC – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement today after the Cybersecurity bill failed a cloture vote.

“I voted against ending debate on this bill last time and I voted no again today because this bill needs improvement.  There are many amendments that Senators proposed in July that we have not debated. Today’s bill is the same flawed bill that failed earlier this year. The bill provides private companies with broad new authority to collect and monitor Americans’ communications, while failing to require industry to make changes which would better protect our nation’s infrastructure. This is an issue that deserves significant debate, and careful consideration by Congress.  We must allow further debate and amendments on this bill.”
