Merkley, Wyden: Electric Vehicles Will Strengthen the Economy and Help End Dependence on Foreign Oil

Washington, D.C.
– Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden issued the following statements Wednesday after Governor Ted Kulongoski announced that the State of Oregon has received a major federal grant to install electric vehicle charging stations between Eugene and Ashland, Oregon:

“Today’s announcement is another step forward in making Oregon the leading electric vehicle state in the nation. Electric vehicles are a key component to ending our dependence on foreign oil and I’m proud that Oregon is leading the way in putting electric vehicles on the road and creating a brighter future for our economy and environment,” said Senator Merkley.

“This is another indication of Oregon getting out front of the new green energy economy with a project that creates jobs and takes us another step closer to ending our reliance on foreign oil,” said Senator Wyden.

In May, Senator Merkley introduced the Electric Vehicles Deployment Act to facilitate rapid deployment of electric vehicles in the United States.
