Merkley Statement on Additional Water for Klamath Users

WASHINGTON, DC
– Today, Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior, announced that additional water resources would be made available for Klamath irrigators.  Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement on the announcement:

“Mother nature has dealt the farmers and ranchers in the Klamath Basin a harsh blow this year. I am very glad to hear that the Department of the Interior continues to do what it can to soften that blow.  Due to somewhat higher water levels than predicted in the Upper Klamath Lake, an additional 35,000 acre-feet of water will be released for irrigators who are facing a devastating drought in the southern Oregon region. This does not diminish the hardship that farmers and ranchers in the Basin are feeling and this does not diminish my effort to fight for additional funding from the federal government to help the region through this tough time.”
