Washington D.C. – Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Congressman Kurt Schrader (D- Ore.)announced today that the Rural Development office within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved an award to the City of Stayton for over $10 million. The award includes a loan of over $8 million and a $2 million grant to replace the existing wastewater treatment plant that serves the Cities of Stayton and Sublimity.
“This award will help replace an aging wastewater treatment plant, create jobs for Oregonians and save money for rate-payers in the region,” said Merkley. “I’m pleased that USDA was able to help make this important project a reality for the Cities of Stayton and Sublimity.”
“This combination of a grant and a loan guarantee will make sure this project can get up and running quickly, creating jobs within the community and improving the environment and the quality of life for Stayton residents,” Wyden said. “Funding these types of infrastructure projects helps to relieve the funding burden of local municipalities while putting people to work and improving the tax base – it’s a win-win.”
“These grants are extremely important for our rural communities,” said Schrader. “I am pleased that the Rural Development office has approved awards for Stayton and Sublimity. These awards will allow for the replacement and upgrade of current wastewater treatment systems and will provide our communities with improved water quality and public health.”
The award announced today is part of the Water and Waste Disposal Loan program within Rural Development at the USDA which helps develop water and waste disposal systems in rural areas and towns with populations less than 10,000. The City of Stayton has a population of approximately 6,816. The funds are available to public bodies, non-profit corporations and Indian tribes.
