Merkley Statement in Remembrance of September 11

Senator Merkley issued the following statement in
remembrance of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11,
2001:

“Eight years ago, our nation faced one of the most tragic
moments in American history.  Today is a time to remember those who lost
their lives during the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington
D.C.

“As a nation, we honor the bravery of the police officers,
firefighters, and rescue workers who put their duty to their fellow Americans
first.  The families of those our nation lost are in my thoughts and
prayers today.

“Despite their destructive impact, the events of September
11th brought out the best in America.  We saw Americans coming
together to assist and support each other in a time of great need.

“To recognize the victims and heroes of this day, this
September 11th has been officially designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance by the
Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

“I encourage Oregonians to visit Serve.gov to find volunteer opportunities in their area.”
