Merkley Statement on 6th Anniversary of Iraq War

Washington, DC – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement on the sixth anniversary of the start of the Iraq War:

“We have now been in Iraq longer than we were involved in the Korean War, World War I, World War II or the Civil War.  It is time that we end this conflict which has done so much to decrease our national security and so much to damage our standing in the world at a high cost in lives lost.  I’m glad we now have an Administration committed to ending this war so that we focus on the great international challenges we face, which require strong leadership by a respected America, especially reversing the global recession, fighting terrorism, and tackling global warming.

“Unfortunately, even as the overall number of troops in Iraq is on the decline, Americans are still being sent to Iraq – including 3,000 members of the Oregon Army National Guard.  On this anniversary, my thoughts are with those serving in Iraq and their families as we pray for their safe return home.”
