MERKLEY: GREEN CLIMATE FUND CONTRIBUTION IMPORTANT FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Today, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement after the Biden Administration announced they are providing $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund to support developing countries in taking stronger climate action:

“This contribution is critically important. Climate chaos is a global problem and it requires a global solution, but the United States is the largest historic contributor. If we want strong international partnership on climate action, we have both a moral and a strategic responsibility to help other countries make the transition to a clean economy. This contribution should be the beginning of a new, stronger commitment to the Green Climate Fund. The world is tired of waiting. Congress and the President need to move aggressively to mitigate climate chaos, starting with meeting the President’s pledge to provide robust funding to international climate finance.”

Merkley – a key member of the Senate Appropriations Committee – has been a leading proponent of the Green Climate Fund and of international solutions to take on climate change. Merkley was instrumental in making sure Congress appropriated the first billion dollars that was contributed to the Green Climate Fund, and annually leads the effort to increase the U.S. contributions.
