Washington DC – Oregon’s U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley joined their colleagues today in introducing the Senate’s first resolution recognizing June as LGBTQ Pride Month. The resolution notes major milestones in the fight for equal treatment of LGBTQ Americans and resolves to continue efforts to achieve full equality for LGBTQ individuals. Today, June 28, marks the 48th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
“This resolution is an important milestone in recognizing the courage and history of the LGBTQ community,” dijo Wyden. “I am proud to stand alongside LGBTQ Americans in the fight for equal treatment under the law in every aspect of their lives, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
“Looking back at Stonewall, it’s clear that we’ve come a long way in pursuing equality for LGBTQ Americans over the last few decades,” dijo Merkley. “However, we still have further to go—which is why I am proud to be leading the fight to pass the Equality Act, to ensure full equality for all LGBTQ Americans under the law. This month, and every month, I will keep fighting until all Americans can live free from the fear of discrimination.”
