Washington DC – Senador de Oregón Jeff Merkley
released the following statement in honor of veterans of the United States
armed forces:
“Since
World War I, when a temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied
nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day
of the eleventh month, we’ve
dedicated this day to honor the patriotism, love of country, and willingness to
serve and sacrifice for our common good of those who have bravely defended and
continue to defend this nation.
“I have the
deepest appreciation for both the service members who fight to preserve our
American ideals of freedom, justice, and democracy and for the families that
stand by them. Families are the true backbone of our military and their
sacrifices preserve our freedoms.
“It is our
responsibility to provide our military members with the training and resources
necessary to carry out their missions in far-away lands, and give them the
support and services to stay healthy and whole when they return home. Our veterans stand up for America when on
deployment. America must stand up for
our veterans when they return home.
"El
many men and women currently serving in uniform and the veterans who met their
nation’s call are in my thoughts and prayers today and every day.”
In honor of Veterans Day, Senator Merkley will attend the yearly
wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier.
