CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — U.S. Coast Guard helicopter search-and-rescue stations on the Oregon and South Carolina coasts will remain open at least until 2018.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that language keeping the stations open is included in an authorization bill that cleared Congress this week and was sent to the president.
South Carolina two Republican U.S. senators, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, worked with Oregon’s Democratic U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley to keep the facilities open.
The South Carolina rescue station is located near Charleston while the Oregon facility is in Newport.
Lawmakers in both states were successful in December of 2014 in their efforts to keep the facilities open until this year. At the time the Coast Guard proposed shutting them down to save money.
