Después eight years of talk and concepts, the James Beard Public Market was officially announced Monday by Portland politicians, city and state leaders and project managers.
The James Beard Public Market will be located at SW 6th and Alder with room for the community and a number of small businesses. Its location near Pioneer Courthouse Square is aimed at amplifying Portland’s status as a foodie destination.
Executive Director Jessica Elkan said it “will be a seven day a week public market featuring a teaching kitchen, an event space, bakery, fish market, butcher shop, cheese shop, wine merchant, local farmstands selling Oregon’s produce, a bookstore, prepared foods, and fast casual dining.”
“Portland is on the road back,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley, one of the many lawmakers and leaders at the press conference.
In 2016, the project was scrapped after years of work implementing the project on the west side of the Morrison Bridge. At that time, project leaders said they had their eye on other potential locations including the southwest waterfront near Zidell Yards and the southeast waterfront near OMSI.
Neither spot came to fruition.
But officials hope to open at least part of the James Beard Public Market in 2025.
The market is named for James Beard, the famous chef and writer who was born in Portland in 1903. He was described by the New York Times as the “dean of American cookery.”
