Senators Invite More Public Comments on Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument

US Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden are inviting more public comments on their proposed expansion of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

Following last week’s public hearing in Ashland with the Deputy Secretary of the Interior, the senators are encouraging all interested parties not able to attend the hearing to submit written comments. Approximately 500 citizens attended.

Local elected leaders and representatives of regional tribes spoke about the expanded monument proposal, as well as members of the public over a three and a half hour period. The public hearing featured the Cascade-Siskiyou area, where three mountain ranges converge creating a unique and spectacular landscape.

President Clinton officially designated the area as a national monument during his administration and President Obama will consider enlarging the monument before the end of his tenure in office.

Those who are interested in submitting written comments on the potential Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument can do so in two ways: submit comments online to www.merkley.senate.gov/contact or by mail to Senator Jeff Merkley, 10 South Bartlett Street, Suite 201, Medford, OR 97501.

Those who are interested in submitting comments are encouraged to do so before November 20th.
