EUGENE, Ore. — Reaction was quick across the country over the Supreme Court’s leaked draft opinion that points to an overturning of Roe v Wade.
Demonstrations and debates have heated up on both sides of the issue.
Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley spoke with us Wednesday about the implications of this potential reversal.
The senator shared his initial thoughts on the draft.
“This decision, should it become the final decision, is an egregious assault on liberty and freedom in America,” Merkley said.
The Senator continued, “No one should make the difficult decision over reproductive health care – and abortion, specifically – except a woman in conversation in dialogue with her partner, with her spiritual advisor, with her doctor. The last place big government should be is dictating decision on intimate medical health care.”
President Biden spoke about the leak and said that it would mean, “Every other decision relating to the notion of privacy is thrown into question.”
We asked Senator Merkley his response to the President’s statement.
“Well, the Supreme Court’s argument in this draft, and we assume it will be their final, is there is no right to privacy. And if there’s no right to privacy, then the government can intrude on our lives in all kinds of ways.”
Senator Merkley told us the Women’s Health Protection Act will be on the floor of the Senate.
He said this would allow voters to know where members of congress stand and that it would essentially be on the ballot.
