Merkley Opposes Craft Nomination to UN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee that oversees the United Nations (UN), released the following statement after Ambassador Kelly Craft’s hearing on her nomination as Ambassador to the UN:

“At a time when climate chaos is the greatest global challenge we face, it’s incredibly disturbing that President Trump has nominated a UN Ambassador with deep personal ties to and a financial stake in the coal industry. Our ambassador to the UN should be coordinating the global community to aggressively take on climate chaos before it’s too late. Instead, with Kelly Craft’s nomination, we have been sent a nominee who will personally profit from the continued burning of fossil fuels and who infamously proclaimed that there are ‘good scientists on both sides’ of the climate debate.

“Kelly Craft is an unacceptable nominee to lead the U.S.’s engagement with the global community at this critical juncture. I will be opposing her nomination, and urging my colleagues to do the same.”
