Merkley, Reed, King Reintroduce Legislation Banning LNG Exports to China

Legislation would also ban exports to U.S. Adversaries Russia, Iran, and North Korea

Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley today reintroduced the Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act, legislation that would lower prices for American households by banning the export of crude oil or liquefied fossil gas (also known as LNG) to our biggest adversaries: China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The bill is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Angus King (I-ME).

“Sending LNG to our adversaries raises prices for Americans,” said Senator Merkley. “This bill helps keep energy affordable for American families by ensuring our resources stay here at home, rather than being shipped to boost the economies of China and Russia.”

“Blocking our adversaries from obtaining U.S.-produced LNG will enhance national security, keep more of this fuel in America, and help reduce energy costs for everyday Americans and Main Street businesses,” said Senator Reed.

“The Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act would ensure that America provides our nation with its power needs before subsidizing industries in adversarial countries. This is a commonsense approach that will support America’s national defense and help to keep energy costs lower for everyday Americans,” said Senator King.

Exporting LNG is causing price instability and rising costs for American households and industries. This spring, the Trump Administration reversed President Biden’s pause on LNG exports and approved two new LNG export facilities, Commonwealth LNG and Golden Pass LNG, just the first of many projects that will harm the planet and domestic economy.

The Protecting American Households from Rising Energy Costs Act would increase American energy security and protect American consumers by ensuring that valuable national resources are not being exported to adversarial nations. This will help keep domestic energy prices stable and affordable for American households and businesses, while not locking us into decades of fossil gas infrastructure that exacerbates climate chaos.
