Merkley Statement in Remembrance of September 11th

Washington, D.C. – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement in remembrance of the Americans who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:

“Tomorrow marks the ninth anniversary of that terrible day when terrorists took the lives of thousands of innocent Americans.   Tomorrow is a time to remember the grave loss we experienced together as a nation and I offer my deepest condolences to the families that have dealt with the heartbreaking loss of their loved ones each and every day for the past nine years.

“Out of the tragedy of the attacks we have also seen some of the best of America, and so on this anniversary I want to thank and honor the brave firefighters, police officers and first responders who acted heroically in the face of tragedy, and salute our troops overseas still fighting to defend us.

“Our free and open society and the strength of our diversity will always triumph over intolerance and hate.  Although September 11th will always be a solemn day of remembrance, it is also a day to recognize the greatness of America and our values.”
