Washington, DC – Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement after the announcement that President Obama has nominated Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State.
“John Kerry will make an excellent Secretary of State. As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Kerry has been an effective leader on foreign policy, and has already shown tremendous skill in the art of diplomacy in his trips abroad in that role. Kerry understands that the U.S. needs to work closely with our allies and other nations to address the world’s most pressing issues.
“One of those most pressing diplomatic challenges we face is mobilizing the international community to reverse potentially devastating climate change. Senator Kerry understands that we need to tackle this global threat head on and has already worked for years to do so. I look forward to his continued leadership on global environmental stewardship in his new role.”
