Washington, D.C. – President Barack Obama today announced that U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan will be his nominee to the Supreme Court. Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement on the nomination:
“Solicitor General Kagan has had a unique and diverse legal career and is widely recognized for her ability to build consensus between colleagues with opposing opinions. I believe the Supreme Court needs justices who can bring that sort of perspective and track record and that there is value in returning to a tradition of having justices with more varied life experiences on the Court. I look forward to meeting Solicitor General Kagan and learning more about her views and background as the confirmation process moves forward.”
