Washington, DC – Oregon’s
Senator Jeff Merkley made the following statement regarding the Oregon
Public Health Department’s identification of a potential H1N1 flu
case in Oregon:
“Today, state officials announced the first potential case of the
H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, in Oregon. I have been closely
monitoring the situation over the last few days. I have spoken to public
health experts and been in contact with officials at the Department
of Health and Human Services and the Center for Disease Control.
“I urge Oregonians to take caution to prevent the spread of the virus.
The most effective means of prevention are those that we practice every
day to stay healthy: washing your hands, covering your mouth if you
cough, and staying home if you are sick.
“I will continue to monitor the situation as it develops in Oregon.
