Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement on the passing of Justice Betty Roberts:
“Justice Roberts has been a giant in Oregon public life for decades. She served in so many roles – from that of a teacher at my alma mater David Douglas High School, to serving in the Oregon legislature, to being the first woman on our Oregon State Supreme Court. In whatever capacity, she has always been there on the front lines fighting for our families and for fairness under the law. She may have been raised in Texas but she was an Oregonian through and through.
“The very first campaign I worked on was her run for the United States Senate. And I remember then being struck by her intelligence, her courage and her dedication to this state. This is a sad day for Oregon as we have truly lost one of our greats. My thoughts are with Betty and her family today.”
